In the early hours of November 1st 1986, a fire broke out in a warehouse at the Sandoz chemical factory near Basel, Switzerland.
The Seveso accident occurred in 1976 when a vat used in the manufacture of hexachlorophene exploded. A cloud of dioxin was released in th explosion, contaminating 18 square kilometres of surrounding countryside, and necessitating the evacuation of more than 900 people. In the year following the accident, the rate of birth defects increased by more than 40 percent.
As firemen played their hoses on the warehouse, chemicals released by the exploding drums were washed into the Rhine. More than 30 tons of pesticides, fungicides and chemical dyes entered the river, rendering it lifeless for 100-200 kilometres.
